Drinking Water

‘Yatn’® working actively as a NGO is raising funds for effective water, sanitation and hygiene projects and initiatives rurally, particularly those characterized by strong community involvement.

More than 1.1 billion people lack access to safe water and 2.6 billion people lack even basic sanitary facilities. Diseases caused by unsafe drinking water and inadequate sanitation remain India’s most serious public health threat, causing 80% of the sicknesses and annually killing between 2 and 5 million people, mainly young children. Lack of water and sanitation undermines the sustainability of other critical needs, including education, economic development, nutrition, environmental health and gender equality.

Although the challenge is great, the solution is known and doable. From individuals to civic groups, from faith-based organizations to NGOs, we as a part of NGO group is working to meet these basic needs. Reducing water-related diseases hinges less on medical breakthroughs than on stronger political will and significantly increased funding. At least 2.6 billion people – its around 41 percent of the global population - do not have access to latrines or any sort of basic sanitation facilities. As a result millions suffer from a wide range of preventable illnesses, such as diarrhoea, which claim thousands of lives each day, primarily young children. To put the spotlight on this issue the UN General Assembly declared the year 2008 the International Year of Sanitation.

Improving access to sanitation is essential because

  • Sanitation is vital for human health
  • Sanitation generates economic benefits
  • Sanitation contributes to dignity and social development
  • Sanitation helps the environment
  • Improving Sanitation is Achievable

You can make a village realise its dream of getting safe drinking water for all. Make it possible for a habitation to get its safe water plant faster by donating towards the minimum contribution required from the village community to set up a Community Safe Water System Apart from the funds needed to set up a drinking water plant in a village, please do contribute any amount towards the health education campaigns that we design to encourage behavioral change among the community that make them more aware and alert about hygiene and sanitation practices. Your contribution will be utilised to train men and women in each village to spread awareness on water and sanitation through meetings, street dramas, literature, music and art with a special focus on women and school children.
